How do I end a text conversation politely?

Updated October 2026 · How we answer

Short answerWrap up with a friendly sign-off that acknowledges the conversation and gives a reason for ending, like being busy or needing to go. This shows respect for both your time and theirs.

Use a Polite Closing

A simple 'I've got to run, but let's talk soon!' or 'It was great chatting—talk later!' works well. It signals the end without being abrupt.

You can also mention a specific reason: 'I'm heading into a meeting' or 'I need to get some sleep.' This makes it clear you're not ending because of them.

Leave the Door Open

If you want to talk again, add a forward-looking statement: 'Let's continue this tomorrow' or 'I'll text you later this week.' This reassures them that you're still interested.

If you don't want to continue, you can still be polite: 'Thanks for the chat, have a good one!' and then stop responding. You're not obligated to keep texting.

Respect Their Response

After you say goodbye, don't keep sending messages. Let the conversation end. If they reply with a goodbye, you can simply 'like' it or not respond.

If they try to keep it going and you're not interested, you can politely say 'I'm actually heading off now, but take care!' and then stop.

Common mistakes

  • Just disappearing without a word, which can leave the other person confused or hurt.
  • Saying 'I have to go' but then continuing to text, which sends mixed signals.
  • Ending too abruptly with 'Bye' and no context, which can seem rude.
